Eat Negative Calorie Foods for Easy Weight Loss

What is A Negative Calorie Food? Can a Food be Without Any Calorie?

n fact no food has negative calories. A food may have very few calories but not without any calorie. So the name "negative calorie foods" appears to be inappropriate. But there are reports of negative calorie effect in some food items.
Calorie is a unit of energy. The energy can be measured by many methods. The calories in foods depend on their composition and the calorie value of a food is not actually its measured values, but is the average energy of a large number of different samples of the food.
1 calorie = 4.184 joule
1 negative calorie = -4.184 joules
Commonly Calories refer to kilocalories.
1 kilocalorie (kcal) = 4.184 kilojoules (kJ)

Our body expends energy (calories) all the time, even if we are sleeping. We burn roughly 60 calories per hour while asleep and 85 while eating! Likewise we also expend calories while eating. Some foods need more calories and some less.
Negative calorie foods are foods, which use more calories to digest than the calories food actually contains! Calories from these foods are much harder for the body to use. In other words, the body has to work hard in order to extract calories from these foods. Even though a food may contain equal amount of calories, much less of these calories can possibly turn into fat in negative calorie foods as fewer calories are actually available to the body.

Consider the facts:
  1. A piece of dessert consisting of 400 Calories (actually 400 kilocalories) may only require 150 Calorie (actually 150 kilocalories) to digest by our body, resulting in a net gain of 250 calories which is added to our body fat !
  2. On the other hand, a 5 calorie raw piece of celery will require much more calories to chew and digest, so resulting in a net loss of calories from our body fat !! It implies that the more you eat, the more you lose weight!!!
Therefore, negative calorie foods are said to be good for achieving weight loss as they act like fat burning foods.

Explanation of Negative Calorie Effect. How it works?

Has this negative calorie effect been scientifically explained or evaluated? Is there any explanation to the theory of negative calorie effect? To get answers to these questions, we searched on the Internet and got the following supporting reports:
  1. All foods have a nutrient (carbohydrate, fat, protein), caloric (calories) and vitamin & mineral content. Vitamins stimulate living tissues to produce enzymes that breakdown the caloric nutrients of that food.
The foods with negative calorie contain sufficient vitamins & minerals that produce enzymes in quantities sufficient to break down not only its own calories, but additional calories from body in digestion as well. This is called "negative calorie effect".
This gives these foods a tremendous natural fat-burning advantage. These foods may also be termed as minus calorie foods.
  2. If you look at the list of negative calorie foods given below, you will find that these foods are natural plant foods like vegetables, fruits, beans, etc. These foods have low fat, low calories, good amount of carbohydrates and dietary fibers. In the countries where the people who eat mainly these foods are found to be lean and thin.
Dr. Neal Barnard M.D, author of the Book "Negative calorie effect" has supported this concept. He says that the carbohydrate present needs much energy to breakdown these foods in the process of eating and digestion.
  3. Dr. Dean Ornish, M.D. of the University of California has reported the results of a diet consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables with no prescribed exercise program that he gave to his patients. He found a dramatic weight loss in his patients that could only be attributed to the consumption of these so-called negative calorie foods.
  4. Many of the users of negative calorie diet have posted on the forums that they have dropped weight eating these foods.

The Free List of Foods Possessing Negative Calorie Effect

The negative calorie food will have maximum benefits when eaten without any empty calorie foods (junk food). There are several foods such as vegetables and fruits that have negative calorie effect. Some of the negative calorie foods that can be eaten in generous quantities are: Asparagus, Beets, Carrot, Zucchini, Papaya, Strawberry, Raspberry, etc. Look at the list below.

How do you eat more while losing more weight at the same time? One of the best answers is to eat "negative-calorie" foods, meaning that these foods actually take more energy to digest than they deliver to your body. While these foods may be an important source of phytonutrients, they are not sources of fat-packing calories.

Because of their surprising lack of calories, these foods can essentially be consumed in unlimited quantities without you gaining weight (body fat). That works because your stomach senses when it is physically full, and it will trigger your brain to stop eating when you can't handle more food. You know that "I feel stuffed" feeling? That's your stomach (which has its own complex nervous system, by the way), telling your brain to tell you to stop eating.

This is why, believe it or not, the simple act of drinking a glass of water before each meal is a proven weight loss strategy. It fills your belly with water, thereby reducing the amount of space left for other foods. So your stomach gets full more quickly, triggering the "stop eating" signals in your brain.

Eating an apple before each meal also works in much the same way. This is true even though apples are not negative-calorie foods. But they are rich in water, and water takes up space in your stomach.

In fact, that's the common property among all negative-calorie foods: They all contain a lot of water locked in a fibrous matrix. Apples are essentially "water fruits," as are grapes and watermelons (hence the name). Many vegetables are also "water vegetables," meaning that they're loaded with water. Celery, for example, is the classic example of a water-rich negative-calorie food (see below).

As you read this list, remember that all foods contain calories, and that the term "negative-calorie food" is a bit of a misnomer. It refers to the effective net calories subtracted from your body through the preparation, eating, digestion and elimination of these foods. In other words, you expend more calories eating them than they deliver to your body.

The upshot is that the more water you consume in your foods, the more quickly you'll feel full and stop eating. Water, it turns out, is the most effective appetite control substance in the world.

Negative Calorie Diet

This diet is based on the fact that in order to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume. The diet recommends to eat the foods from the above list. The negative calorie diet (some says it zero calorie diet) is very helpful in fast weight loss. You should know the complete list of the foods requiring your body to "burn" more calories processing them through your digestive system than the actual calorie content of the food itself. This results in your body burning up the excessive stored fat!

The Verdict on Negative Calorie Foods & Diet

Although the above studies / reports do give some explanation directly or indirectly in support of the negative calorie concept, yet a scientific thorough study is needed. Till that time, it can be said that eating these so called negative calorie foods is a better alternative to fad diets. Since these foods are low in calories (100 g of celery, cabbage, cucumber or lettuce have about 14 calories each; asparagus has 20 calories, carrots 40 calories, broccoli 25 calories, etc.) and fat, one thing is certain - these are not going to increase your body fat. At least you can eat these foods to offset calories in other foods.
These so-called negative calorie foods can therefore form part of a perfectly balanced diet. You may include maximum number of foods from the list of negative calorie foods in your daily diet without any adverse effect. It will definitely improve your health and you will feel energetic.
Conclusion: All foods have some calories. No food is actually "negative calorie food". BUT the overall effect of certain foods in our body is that of "negative calories". Negative calorie foods are said to be good for weight loss and overall health.
